This is what I find discouraging about RATM sometimes -- an opinion is expressed strictly in adjectives. Anyone can throw an adjective at anything. In order for this opinon to be worth reading, one should explain WHY the score to FORUM supposedly is weak? How does it not serve the book? What opportunities does it miss? What would have been a better choice for the subject of a song at this moment or that? As it happens, I like FORUM a good deal because it doesn't merely amplify the plot but acts as a comment on how musical comedy songs have traditionally been used in light musicals. It is one of the first post-modern scores I know, one that incorporates a knowingness about form and the functions of different genres of songs into the songs themselves.
